Fish on a Budget

There are SO many health benefits to making salmon and other fish a part of your diet. However, there are NOT many benefits to your grocery budget when it comes to making salmon part of your diet.

I live in a land-locked area. The only fresh fish we get around here is trout or catfish – neither of which am I a fan…but I LOVE salmon and tuna. Because it’s important to me to feed my family good quality food, I’ve made adjustments in my budget for buying this type of thing.

People who live on the coast are blessed to be able to find good quality fish products for a great price – but they’re not rolling in venison like I am. No matter where you live, there are benefits and set-backs when it comes to food.

There are two main ways that I feed my family seafood without breaking my monthly grocery budget.

  1. Buy frozen: frozen fish is almost always cheaper than fresh. It’s usually frozen on the boat or at its peak of freshness, so in my opinion it’s even better than buying “fresh” from the meat department.I also try to buy in bulk when buying frozen fish – it’s usually cheaper from a big-box store like Sam’s or Costco.

  2. Buy canned: I was raised on canned salmon and canned tuna. I love it. I know some people are not fans of canned meats, but I feel fine feeding it to my family. It’s way better for us than to sit down to a can of Vienna sausages. 😉

I wait for sales and then purchase in bulk. This morning I purchased 20 cans of fish because it was on a good sale – and I would have bought more, but the shelf was bare. 😉 Raincheck!

How do you save on seafood?
